Vera Barbara Alteen of Bedford Nova Scotia, aged 89, passed away peacefully Dec 19, 2024 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, NS. Barb was born August 11, 1935, in Grand Falls NL to Edgar and Mary Ellen Way and was the eldest of four siblings.
Barb made the journey to Trois Rivière QC in 1954 where she married Robert (Bob) Dawe, returning to Grand Falls in 1961. Years later, after Bob’s passing in 1988, Barb married Lawrence (Laurie) Alteen in 1996 and they later relocated to Bedford NS. Barb was known as the consummate homemaker and hostess and was well known for her culinary skills. She was blessed with a quick wit, loved company and a glass of wine with family and friends. Barb, enjoyed playing bridge, curling, travel and long car rides. She had an active social life with all her friends in Bedford N.S. at Summer Cove Condominium. In 1990 she had the privilege of being on the team that represented NL at the Canadian Senior Ladies Curling Championships, held in White Horse, YK.
Barb is predeceased by her parents Edgar and Mary Ellen Way, her sister Anne Mackey, her first husband Bob Dawe and her second husband Laurie Alteen. She is survived by her brothers David Way and Terry Way her son Rob (Mary Lou), grandchildren Robert and Christine (Justin) Williams and great grandchildren Dylan and Ffion Williams. From her second marriage with Laurie Alteen she is predeceased by his granddaughter Patti and survived by his sons Louis (Yvonne), Larry (Debbie) and daughter Kathy as well as grandchildren Joey, Sarah (Paul) Shallow and Laura (Andrew Reddy) also great grandchildren Leo, Nora and Maren.
The family is grateful for the care of the doctors and staff of St Martha’s Regional Hospital, in particular the team of the Palliative Care Floor. Cremation has taken place with a service to take place in January 2025 and an internment at a later date in Grand Falls-Windsor NL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara Alteen’s memory to All Saints Anglican Church, Bedford NS; St Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of their choice.
