On January 2, 2020, our mother, Annie ABBASS (nee Tomie) of Halifax, formerly of Sydney, passed from this life into eternal life after a lengthy illness. As she approached the gates of heaven, amidst the peal of church bells, her angel Tommy was waiting proudly to present her to the Lord before going on to meet her loved ones once again at the Father’s House.
Mom was predeceased by her husband and our beloved father, Joseph Jobe Abbass, her special son Tommy, her parents Neil and Lillian Tomie, her brother Fred and her sisters Dollie and Freda. Mom is survived by her brother George (Sydney) and her children: Fr. Jobe, Ottawa, Denise (David) McKeigan, Little Narrows, NS, Frances, Dartmouth, Michael (Joan), Beaumont, AB, Simone, Halifax, Lily Khattar (Larry) White, St. John’s, NL and Paul (Jessica), Hudson, QC. Mom also has twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild who will all miss their Sitty. It is impossible to say in a few words what our mother has meant to us over her almost 90 years. She was certainly a driving force behind her children’s successes and achievements. Her own discipline and pursuit of excellence were always an inspiration to us whether it was in the home, including her incomparable Lebanese cooking, or outside in achieving a Life Master in contract bridge in 1994. Mom was an avid, daily walker for most of her life and people she made friends with on the way have probably missed her over the last number of months. However, what is outstanding is that Mom was never far from the faith or her church. Known for her beautiful soprano voice, Mom began as a young girl to sing the Latin Mass daily at Holy Redeemer in Whitney Pier, she sang for countless weddings and our hearts would swell with pride when she would sing even in her later years. Mom also served in the church as lector and Eucharistic minister for many years. What will always remain with us is the example of Mom’s untiring love and sacrifice in raising and caring for us all even to the end. We pray that she will continue from heaven to show us the way.
