Anna Margaret (Longobardi) Laffin - 94, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born 1920, in Guysborough, NS, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (O’Connor) Longobardi.
Anna studied nursing at the Halifax Infirmary and graduated from ST.F.X with a BSc RN in 1943. She served as a Nursing Sister in The Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps where she met the love of her life, Doug; and they embarked on a romance that spanned 57 years.
Following the war, Anna instructed new nurses at the Halifax Infirmary and then took on the position of Director of the School of Nursing Assistants. Throughout her life, students, family, and friends sought Anna out for advice, a swim, or a game or two of bridge. She was a life master and founding member of the Halifax Bridge Club. Anna could always find a bridge game while travelling or hosting Saturday nights at home. Beginning young, Anna played piano until quite recently and Christmas was her absolute favorite season and her grandchildren have inherited her musicality. Anna loved crosswords, but never had a cross word for anyone. Her generosity and kind nature stemmed from her deep faith. In her retirement, Anna volunteered at the Halifax Infirmary, NS Rehab Center and UNICEF. She was an original member of the Osteoporosis Association of Nova Scotia and was honored by them for her dedication.
Besides her parents, Anna is predeceased by her beloved husband Douglas (2004) and her brother George Longobardi (1992). She is survived by her children: Ann Louise (Paul) Howe, Dartmouth; Douglas (Valerie) Halifax; Mary (Bob) Wilson, Comox,BC; Peter (Pauline) Nanaimo,BC and Michael (Vonda) Bridgewater NS. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Angela (Paul) deBurger, Kevin Howe, Nicholas (Val), Ashley and Emma Laffin, John and Brian Wilson, Christopher (Miha), Patrick ( Maggie) and Philip Laffin, Maia and Breanna Laffin. Anna was loved by her many nieces and nephews, and her two special great-granddaughters, Adriana and Rhea Laffin.
We are grateful to our dedicated care-giving team over the past several years: Ethel, Janina, Joanne, Carol, Andrea, Amanda, and Dr. D. Tilley. These kind and gentle people helped her enjoy a wonderful quality of life.
