Jan would have liked that game last night - good baseball. Opening Day is a week away - this season for you, Jan. #LGM!

Jan was one of my oldest and best friends.  He was best man at my wedding, and gave a toast that my wife Barbara has not let me forget in 40 years.  Jan was one of a kind.  We lived far apart -- he in NJ, me in MA -- but if I called him and simply said "Hello," he immediately knew it was me, and vice versa.  We could just pick up where we had left off.  One thing in particular I loved about Jan was his laugh, which ranged from a lower register chortle to a high-pitched wail.  I got to hear it a lot, since he always laughed at my jokes (even if no one else did).  He also was a wannabe conductor -- he would point his fingers in the air and wave his arms as if directing the musicians on record or the radio.  I will miss him dearly.  Take care, Jan -- we'll go to Venezia's next time.

Our deepest condolences for the loss of your brother Jan.  May you find comfort in the memories of past  times of joy and laughter, spent together.

Jan started as one of my mentors in 1999. In 2011, I was fortunate to become his manager. Jan's professional attributes were always appreciated but the passion he had was second to none.   In 1999, he introduced himself as 'Master of the Universe' albeit the data universe of business objects, he did this with a sense of humor and laughter that was the foundation of a 20+ year working relationship and friendship. Jan, we did data when data wasn't cool. Maybe we made it cool! One of our last office conversations was you expressing your interest in Cloud storage and here you are again leading the way, only in a way you could. Let's see what kind of pull you have up there for the Mets.  The mystery of the M&M eating style shall forever stand.   I will miss you my friend.

I have known Jan a long time. We first met when he was three and I was four when he visited his grandfather who lived next door. Over the years we shared many interests, some of which Jan introduced me to. We played and created war board games. We shared a love of music and did trips to Greenwich Village with the excuse  to buy records but we just really wanted to go hangout in the village. Jan turned me on to Jimi Hendrix  and The Mothers of Invention and   "hip" non-commercial  radio stations,  and volunteered at WBAI. We even played in our infamous Jug Band the  South Philadelphia Cow Shit Kickers (Jan and I played harmony and rhythm kazoos as we thought neither of us was good enough to be lead). We also shared an interest in sports, playing basketball in my backyard and for the USY team and later as avid baseball fans. He was definitely an important and influential person in my life and will be missed.

This was probably the day we met. Nuff said. I have known Jan all my life and it is so hard to imagine the world without him.  Our families shared many golden summers. 


Jan and I shared a love of of good food and wine, travel, and photography, among other things.  I will always treasure the memory of how much he appreciated my photos.  

Once he and Janet asked me to photograph them with their beloved poodles.   It was very hard to get those poodles to sit still!  But a good time was had by all.

I am going to miss Jan dearly. I have attached the relationship tag as a colleague but he is nothing less than a family. I have enjoyed a decade long friendship with this kind, honest and genuinely caring person. We have never met in person but have conversed for thousands of hours and his loss hits close to home. May we all find strength at this toughest time and remember Jan forever. 

A kind and generous man. I will miss him. 

The first time I met Jan was at a New Sounds concert. I had noticed that he and I were in seats near each other for multiple performances, and apparently he did too. After two or three of these, during one intermission he turned to me and said, “Well, we might as well introduce ourselves.” What followed was a wonderful music friendship. It can be hard to find someone else who likes weird modern music, and we discovered that our tastes were very similar. So we would meet at various performances and compare notes. I also discovered a delightful, eccentric, fun and funny human being. At one point, Jan bought a beautiful high-powered red Mustang, and I was lucky enough to cop rides back to Grand Central Station in it. That car had a great bass beat, and I’m pretty sure that was one of the reasons he chose it.
