Born in Manhattan, New York, on February 16, 1941, to parents Dr. Charles and Mrs. Ruth Greenberg, Dr. Levine grew up in Wingdale, New York. She attended Bryn Mawr College where she earned a bachelors degree and then matriculated to the State University of New York at Buffalo where she earned her degree in medicine. Dr. Levine completed her residency and fellowships in psychiatry at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Levine was a gifted clinician and psychiatrist for her entire career. Her passion for psychiatry began as a child, as she was determined to follow in her father’s footsteps and did so with incredible success. She was one of relatively few women at the time to attend medical school but was never daunted. She was named as the top psychiatric resident in her residency class at the University of Michigan and was well deserved.
She practiced psychiatry her entire career and built an independent and joint practice with her husband, also a psychiatrist, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Her dedication to the field and to her patients was evident in that she practiced medicine up until the last weeks of her life and had a dedicated patient base who remained with her throughout many years.
In 1963, Ellen met her husband Allwyn while they both were attending medical school. She was both a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend. They were married in 1964 and have two sons - Jonathan Levine (wife Kristin) and Michael Levine (wife Lindsey) and grandchildren Owen, Isabella, Cora and Mira.
She had a joie de vivre second to none. One of her great passions was the ballet of which she was a true aficionado. She served on the advisory board at the school of American ballet and did volunteer work for the New York City Ballet. She possessed an unbelievable love for life as was evident to everybody she touched from her family, friends and patients.
Donations are welcome to either New York Ballet or Sloan Kettering Memorial hospital.
