Eleanor Estelle Kovall (nee Kragen), age 90, died on October 14 at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains after a brief illness. Born and raised in the Bronx, Eleanor was a graduate of Hunter College and worked for many years as a physical education and health education teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, retiring in 1988. She was married for more than 50 years to the late Dr. Lawrence Kovall and lived for thirty-five years in Teaneck where she was a founding member of Temple Beth Ahm.
More recently, Eleanor lived in Clearbrook in Monroe Township and was active in many of the activities offered there, including water aerobics classes which she founded and sometimes led.
Eleanor is survived by her son Michael (wife, Dale Spindel), by her daughter Wynne, by grandchildren Andrew Kovall (fiancée, Lisa Miller), Melanie Mootoo (husband Lionel), Scott Tafuri (wife Regina) and Roxanne Kovall, and by great-grandson Alexander Mootoo. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Mollie and Louis Kragen, her brother, Dr. Arthur Kragen, and by her grandson Ryan Spindel Kovall.
Funeral services will be held at Beth El Cemetery in Paramus. Shiva will be held at the home of her son in Cranford, NJ. Donations in Eleanor’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
