It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joyce Broughton on January 10, 2024 in her 87th year.
Loving wife to Reginald for 65 wonderful years. Devoted mother to Kevin (Beverleigh) and Karen Hammond (Douglas). Proud grandmother to Andrew, Ryan, Kyle, Lee, Matthew, Lucas, Monica, James & Marlie-Joy. Treasured great grandmother to Jayden. She will be missed by all her friends and extended family.
Joyce, born on April 1st, 1937, in Hamilton, Ontario, to George and Florence Homewood, embarked on a journey through life that touched the hearts of many. Her early years were marked by the challenges of World War II, leading her to move around various places such as Alberta, Toronto, and St. Thomas, before finally finding a lasting home in Brantford at the war's end.
A graduate of BCI&VS in Brantford, Joyce's passion for education led her to the Brantford Board of Education administrative office upon graduation. It was there that she began a dedicated career, contributing her talents and skills to the service of others.
In 1958, Joyce exchanged vows with Reginald, and together they embarked on a new chapter, settling in Guelph in 1960. Their journey was one of love, companionship, and shared experiences.
Throughout her life, Joyce remained a steadfast member of The Salvation Army, first in Brantford and later in Guelph. Her commitment extended beyond mere attendance, as she took on the role of church secretary for many years. Music was a source of great joy for Joyce, and she immersed herself in it by playing the piano and organ, as well as lending her voice to the church choir.
Her community involvement extended to the Girl Guides of Canada, where she served as both a group leader and at the district level. Joyce's compassion and support were not limited to local endeavors; she had a deep interest in backing missionaries and maintained regular contact with Canadian Salvationists serving overseas.
In 2014, Joyce was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a formidable opponent that she faced with incredible courage for ten years. Her strength and resilience during this challenging time were an inspiration to all who knew her.
The family would like to extend a special thank you the staff of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph, LTC – 4 North for the wonderful care Joyce received over the past three & ½ years.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Salvation Army Citadel, Guelph.
