Joseph (Joe) Shortt, a man of adventure and intellect, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Born on June 8, 1938, in Ligoniel, Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Joseph and Teresa Shortt, Joe's life was a journey that spanned continents and touched the lives of many.
Joe's early years were spent at St. Malachy's Grammar School where he made some lifelong friends. At the age of 18, he embarked on a new chapter in Canada, where he would not only build a career but also create a family. It was there that he met Moira Bell, and together they shared a bond that would endure a lifetime.
Joe and Moira shared their lives with their two children, Kevin and Joseph. Joe graduated from the University of Guelph and University of Waterloo, and then became a computer and mathematics professor at Sheridan College.
He was a published writer, and a true adventurer at heart. Joe's wanderlust took his family on bold journeys across the globe. They called Malta and Abu Dhabi home for a time, forging lifelong friendships along the way. From Singapore to Italy, Kenya to Canada, Joe's adventures introduced him to many cultures and friends.
In his leisure, Joe was an unwavering fan of American football and Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish, his enthusiasm infectious to all around him. He was a passionate Habs hockey fan and a lover of chocolate.
Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph. And though Joe's journey has come to an end, he will live on in the memory of his wife Moira, his son Kevin, his daughter-in-law Jennifer, and his grandchildren, Jada and Graydon. He leaves behind his brother Brian, and sister-in-law Jean, his brother-in-law Ian, as well as a host of friends and colleagues.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice Wellington.
