VARTY, James (Jim) W. – Jim died at the ripe old age of 96. Son of W. George Varty and Sophia Beatrix Varty (née Ridley). Missed by sons Peter (Pat), David & Allen (Elizabeth) and granddaughters Lara and Élise. Predeceased by his brothers Doug, Bruce and Keith Varty. Jim attended North Toronto C.I. where he was a star basketball player and track & field athlete. Serving in Belgium during WWII as a Captain with the Lorne Scots, Jim met & married Elisabeth (Betty) Goormaghtigh (d. 2007) in 1945. Post war, they settled in Hamilton & later Brantford & began a family while working as an accountant with Hamilton Porcelains. They moved to Toronto and, in the mid ‘50s, started Varty Equipment Sales. Jim sold his successful business in 1972 and retired at age 57. Retirement saw Jim & Betty traveling the world, spending summers at their beloved cottage on Lake Kasshabog and wintering on various Caribbean islands. In later years, Jim and Betty moved to Guelph and wintered at their Green Valley, Ariz. home where they met up with many dear friends. Jim will be remembered for his remarkable tenacity, especially as applied to his passion… persuing the elusive muskie! Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at a later date.
