Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 56 years, Susan; children Rebecca (Eric) Morris and Daniel (Sarah) Atkinson; grandchildren Charlotte, Elijah, William and James; brother Andrew (Connie); brother-in-law Stephen (Susan); nephews and nieces Sam, Alexei, Katie and Ruth. Predeceased by his parents James and Kate and his sister-in-law Irene. Jim was a friend and mentor to thousands of students, colleagues, friends and athletes. He will be deeply missed.
Born in Leeds, England, Jim came to the University of Guelph in 1970 for his PhD and stayed to teach in the U of G’s Nutrition and Animal Biosciences departments for nearly 50 years. He won many teaching awards, including the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Award and the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Jim was a much-loved professor who challenged his students with his distinctive and personal style. He made every student feel valued and brought out the best in everyone.
Jim also spent more than 30 years as a dedicated coach of both men’s and women’s rugby at the University of Guelph. He was inducted to the Gryphon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994. In honour of his contribution to women’s athletics, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport organization still presents the Jim Atkinson Award to the Women’s Rugby Coach of the Year.
Jim was brilliant, funny, warm, opinionated, generous, interested in everyone and everything. Gifted with a sharp mind, a soft heart and an astonishing memory, Jim never forgot a name, a face or a fact. He was an enthusiastic and curious traveller, always looking for excuses to visit somewhere new. Jim loved all games and sports and was a lifelong supporter of Leeds United Football Club. His passions were too many to name, including natural history, music, the CBC, books on all subjects, Monty Python, cryptic crosswords and wordplay of all kinds.
A private family service is being held in Guelph on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place later this year.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the University of Guelph’s Jim Atkinson Athletics Scholarship Fund or to Wild Ontario, an environmental and science education program which was close to Jim’s heart. Links to both funds are available at uofg.convio.net/Atkinson
