John was born on May 25, 1969, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Mary McKinnon & the late Hugh John “Jack” McKinnon SR. John is survived by his mother Mary (Jim Flint), brothers Milton (Diane) of Saskatchewan, Ernie (Barb) of Ottawa and sister Gail (Tim) of Saskatchewan. John is also survived by his son, Adam Bertrand (Amy). John was the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews. John was also a beloved son-in-law, brother-in-law & uncle with his former spouse Rosemarie McKinnon (nee Coniglio).
John was a talented artist who moved to Guelph in 1989 with his close friend Luke Ellis, in pursuit of a music career. Over the years, John built and joined many bands and performed individually. In the late 1980’s John was known for his bands, “Silence” and “Fathom” with Luke Ellis. In 1991 John met his next musical partner, Joel Bard of Guelph. Together they formed the band “Jake Stacey” which evolved into their all-original band “Foundation” in 1995. In 2000 John joined “Practically Hip” with Dean Hughes, Trent Richer, Glenn Booth, & Mark Cavarzan. He enjoyed 24 years of playing the music of one of Canada’s most iconic bands, The Tragically Hip. John was also a huge fan of The Beatles and enjoyed playing their music in his band “Day Tripper” with Trent Richer, Sean O’Brien & Ron Ferguson. John had many more bands and music collaborations. He was grateful for all the musical connections he made with other talented artists and fans over the years. John was also a skillful and talented guitar teacher to many students. Known as the “Guelph Guitar Guy”, John mentored budding guitar students with his softspoken guidance and patience. John’s family and friends want to thank everyone who sent their love and best wishes to him over the past four months. John’s diagnosis was sudden, and he did his best to stay positive throughout his treatments.
Deepest gratitude to the sixth-floor nursing staff and doctors at Guelph General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre who gave him exceptional care. Special thank you to his friends Dawn and Karen who helped him during the last weeks of his life.
Arrangements entrusted to Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home – Hart Chapel, cremation has taken place. A private interment ceremony is planned in Sault Ste. Marie at a later date.
