I was able to meet Gerhard through his friends Marie and Chester, who was also my host family when I was studying abroad in Columbus. I was not surprised to see them together with Eva being such good friends with each other, because they’re all very nice and interesting people to get to know and get along with. Gerhard loved joking about me “jumping off an airplane” (doing skydiving) and giving me nickname (“Ping Pong”). Every time we went to China Bell, he and Eva would only get the one and only (American) Chinese dish called “sweet n sour chicken” despite me and Chester’s all other (much better) recommendations! However, I think maybe it’s because I liked him and Eva so much , that I later even fell in love with sweet n sour chicken... I still remembered the first German potato salad I’ve ever had was made by him when I first visited him and Eva in their house. It was delicious! I missed seeing him and Chester teasing at each other while having coffee in their backyard. It is hard to say goodbye, but I will always remember the good memories we shared. Thank you for being such a good friend, Gerhard!

So I recently had to say See you later not goodbye to my great Friend Gerhard. I met Gerhard when I was like 16 years old at the Waffle House.  The first time I met him it was 2am at the Waffle house and he wanted a pizza. I looked at him and told him my name and that I know where we can get a pizza at 2am. Not knowing but a few minutes he got in the car with me and we made a trip to Hound Dogs Pizza. He was very happy. And I made a great friend l. We always met at the Waffle House and would make plans to go gamble or somewhere else to eat. We had a regularly group at Waffle house. He told me I would never meet his wife because I cuss to much. But over the years I met his wife and the whole family and they have always treated me like family, and invited me to family events. He always told me I would not make it to see 30 because of the way I ate. I could not ask to have met a better person. He has helped me out in so many way I will never forget him. This is I'll see you later my friend not goodbye. So many will be lost without you. I still want to pick up the phone every night after work and call and see if you or Eva need anything. Or u want to go gambling. Things will never be the same without you.  You have been in my life for over 20 years. Love you my friend. Please keep watchbover all of us. In the old days in North Carolina Gerhard knew I was kind of having a hard time financially. He had visited recently and been gone a couple weeks and it was a hot day so I turned on the fan overhead. All of a sudden there were pennies from heaven! Quarters were flying off the blades of the fan! Gerhard had a habit of hiding money different places in my house and I usually never found it till after he was long gone.... He liked it that way.  Sometimes I would go to get a cup for coffee and there would be change in the cup!  In his own way he watched out for me for many years. Thank you dear Gerhard. And my sincere condolences to the family.

Gerhard was my older brother. I couldn't have had a better one. We shared many good times together such as birthdays, holidays, green card day & eating out. Towards the end he had trouble eating all his food but he could always eat desserts. His favorites were cheesecake, ice cream & chocolate shakes from McDonald's. Gerhard was very helpful to us as well as to others. He has installed ceiling fans, recessed lighting, a microwave oven & helped with many other projects.  When Harold had car trouble, no matter how cold the weather, he was there. When he would by jeans, they were always too long. He would bring them over & wanted them shortened that evening. I would always do that for him. Poor Harold had to wait weeks before his were done. Gerhard was a very smart person. He could fix anything. Sometimes he had to sleep on it, but the next day he had it figured out. Gerhard was a good husband, father, brother & friend. He loved what was important to him.

I knew Gerhard through Eva. They were the couple you knew were a force together. He was the fierce protector for those who were family or like family. He was so fun to talk with, home projects, latest news, and always his wonderful humor interjected to keep me laughing. I so admired his enduring desire to care for Eva, even through all the treatments and pain of his cancer. He amazed everyone by beating all projections of longevity, just so he could stay with her. What a beautiful love. His children are the apple from his tree. So much like him in many ways. 
He will be so missed.

Almost from day one when I moved to Hardesty, I was having coffee with him. We had coffee everyday for over 10 years. We talked about so many things. While having coffee he liked to watch Laurel and Hardy movies, we even watched some in German! He loved to meet the Chinese students that would stay at our home, he especially like a young  Chinese girl named Jai. She loved Eva and Gerhard and even sent them a letter from China. Often, we would sit and listen to Christian Music, some of his favors were "Why me Lord" and "Mary did you know".  He was always helping me with home projects. Once we did our car ports at the same time. He never liked to see me paint, one day he said " Chester, before I EVER let you paint anything of mine, I will tie paint brushes to my feet and paint it my self." He is such a funny guy. 
He loved his family, especially his Granddaughter. we would talk for hours about what he should get her for Christmas. She was his Christmas. Eva, well, you had better not touch her around Gerhard. Once during a birthday party for her, a male friend gave her a hug and Gerhard said " alright, that is enough." I of course had to top that, so during a photo, I gave Eva a kiss on the cheek, well when Gerhard saw that he called me and said " Chester there will be something special in your coffee tomorrow."  Llove and miss him so much it hurts.

We  lost a great friend with the passing of Gerhard. We met at Waffle House years ago after work.  We   became  good friends with him . It  became a regular thing stopping  & having coffee with him & our friends every night for many years. We will miss his stories & humor . Most of all, his presence.  Fly with the Angels my friend!

When I moved into Hardesty Village Eva & Gerhard were the first people I met.  They welcomed me into their home and treated me like family. Gerhard was always giving me some humor while he cooked. He was a serious man at times when he talked with me about my car & my job.  When I lost my job and my Mom became ill Gerhard always asked about her & financially offered help with my getting to see her.   He supported me when a neighbor bullied me & the last advice he gave me was to get a job working from home. We had a commonality and that was our car.  He also gave me advice about it.   We had a lot of good times. He was like a Dad to me. He will be missed!  I will miss making him cheesecake. Even though he went to see our heavenly father his memory will live on in my heart!  I was blessed to have known him.

I’ll always remember getting coffee with him. The first time I met him he told me to call him Doc. I always did and years later when I did he just laughed because he forgot he told me to do that. He was one of the best listeners I’ve ever met and the world will not be the same without him. Love and miss you Doc, thanks for being a true friend.

When Gerhard passed part of our family passed. He was my grandchildren's grandpa even though we were not blood because he always showed up at their events and came to visit them in North Carolina. We called him smokin angel and he called my grandkids the Farkle family. May his family feel God's warmth and comfort at this difficult time.
