Stephen Coates

Stephen Coates Sr., age 64, passed away on December 22, 2022. Beloved father to Erica Coates, Stephen Coates Jr., and Christina Coates. Father to his treasured dogs, Katie and Obie. Cherished brother to Cynthia Coates, Joseph Coates, and Frank Coates. Loving uncle to Jason Nowacki, Christopher Coates, James (Bub) Coates, Nicholas Coates, and Sheldon Coates.

Stephen, better known as Pie, has been described by many who knew him as a legend, a role he most certainly filled. The incredible legacy he has left behind includes family, loyalty, and selflessness above all, which will be forever cemented in the hearts of all who knew him. Those close to him observed this through the caretaking of his dearly loved, late mother, Virginia Marie Lacommare-Coates, the devotion to his children and the generosity towards his countless friends and any stranger he may have met along the way. He was known as one-of-a-kind, best dressed, a phenomenal singer (especially karaoke), a coach, free spirit, and someone who had “a personality twice the size that he was”. He loved the outdoors, Elton John, golfing, motorcycle rides to Belle Isle, and of course Johnny Blacks. He lit up any room as soon as he stepped in. Stephen lived to uphold his late father’s legacy which he shared on the 30th anniversary of his father death; “Today as you taught us, we’ll be kind to the less fortunate, I’ll give someone a break, I’ll look out for my family, and I’ll over tip my ass off everywhere I go”. He succeeded tremendously and we will continue to do the same.

Visitation for Stephen will be on Tuesday, December 27 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, with a rosary at 7:00pm, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. A funeral Mass will be at 10:00am on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. Stephen will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery with his mother and father in Roseville, MI.
