Al graduated from business school in Richmond where he was born and raised. He retired as a manager in the trucking industry after 35 years. His job took him from Richmond, Virginia to Atlanta and then to Lubbock, Texas. Mr. Plageman proudly served his country in the Army-Air Force for five years during WWII. He was a member of the Two by Two Sunday School Class at Second Baptist Church. Mr. Plageman was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hampton, Georgia, where he had the privilege of recently being awarded The 50 Year lifetime award. He was an avid golfer and was happiest when on the course with good friends. Al was a volunteer with the Auxiliary of Spalding Regional Hospital. He often spoke of loving every minute spent there. He was an avid reader and frequent visitor to the library. Al sometimes read a novel a week as recently as a year ago.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ann Toney Plageman; sons, John Everett Plageman (Cindy) and Kevin Howard Plageman (Jean). He was Papa Hoot to grandchildren, Rex, Scott, Sarah, Grace, John and Parker Plageman and 4 great-grandchildren. His strong work ethic will be a legacy to his children and grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mr. John Allie (Al) Plageman, Jr. will be held Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Dr. Don Yarbrough will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Westwood Gardens with Masonic Rights. Friends may visit the family 1 hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 49416, Atlanta, GA 30359 or to the Second Baptist Church, 522 W. Broad St., Griffin, GA 30223 in memory of Al.
