Tom was born on April 24, 1936 in Portland, Oregon and was the son of Edward and Ruth (Thoms) Zimmer. He graduated from Jefferson High School and enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea where he served as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America, for the officers’ children In Korea. He always knew he had the best job in the Army. He later received an honorable discharge.
Tom worked for Portland General Electric (PGE) as a wireman. Tom really loved his job and the lifelong friends he gained there. He worked many years at the Trojan Power Plant with PGE. He retired after 23 years of service.
He was raised at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and School in Portland and was a member at St. Henry’s in Gresham. He enjoyed hunting, collecting coins and reading. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends and he really loved his little dog, Bowzer. Tom had a special place in his heart for the Boy Scouts of America where he served as a Scout Master for many years.
Tom is survived by his brother, Jim (wife, Jan) Zimmer of Portland, sister-in-law, Daneen Zimmer of Portland, nephews, Larry Zimmer of Portland and Dennis Zimmer Jr. of Portland and nieces, Julie Howe of Portland, Nancy Zimmer of Portland and Katie Milojevic of Beaverton, many great and great-great nieces and nephews , and a group of really awesome friends.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Gresham. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Thomas Zimmer to the Boy Scouts of America. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
