April 22, 1941 – September 3, 2019
Mike was born to Pearl and Maurice Christy April 22, 1941. He was the fifth of seven children that were raised in North Portland and the Holy Redeemer Parish.
Mike Christy passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on September 3,, 2019 after a 20-year battle with prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Susan Christy (Hanselman) October 1987 and daughter Barbara Livingston (Christy) February 2008. He is survived by his daughter Beth Twardoch (Christy); son-in-law Frank, son Matt; fiancé Jessica, grandsons Alex, Kyle, and Michael; granddaughters Staci Albano (Nick) and Samantha; great-grandson Jack (Staci and Nick), special friend Linda, and his lifelong friend of 70+ years Lee “Foo” Eilertson. Mike is also survived by many extended family members and friends that loved him dearly.
Mike loved spending time with his family camping at Timothy Lake, watching football, getting together for Sunday dinners, golfing, reading, clam digging on the Washington Coast, and recently, spending time with his great-grandson Jack. Mike was known for his infectious laugh (at times nasty and mischievous), a smile, a twinkle in his eye that would light up a room, and, at times, his “inappropriate” birthday cards!!!
Mike’s roots run deep in North Portland where he was born and raised. Mike attended Holy Redeemer Grade School, Central Catholic High School, and Jefferson High School.
Mike’s career spanned 44 years at NW Natural Gas Company where he retired in 2006. After retirement, Mike moved with his beloved 4-legged friend Kia to Oysterville, Washington before returning to the Portland/Vancouver area in 2013.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 28th at noon at Holy Redeemer Church, 25 N. Rosa Parks Way, Portland 97217. A reception will be held afterward at the home of Beth and Frank Twardoch where all are welcome to celebrate the life of Mike.
In lieu of flowers, we are asking for your help to, in the words of Mike, “continue to fight” against prostate cancer. Please follow the link below to donate in honor of Mike Christy:
