Marvin Stanley Soreng passed away on February 19, 2018, in Portland, Oregon. He was born on February 10, 1942, in Portland, Oregon, to his parents: Micheal and Geneva (Smalley) Soreng. He spent his early years in Bellevue, Washington. In 1949, the family began to move frequently, as Micheal worked in construction. The family lived in many places, such as Kortes, Wyoming, Bridgeport, Washington, Montana and California. In 1957, the family moved to India for 18 months, followed by three years in Iran. Marvin studied via correspondence courses, and worked on the dam at the batch plant. When he returned to the United States, he attempted to enroll for High School at Redmond High, but the school would not count his correspondence credits, so he joined the Navy instead. He worked in a Krypto (code) job on the ship in Long Beach, California. Following his service in the Navy, Marvin studied engineering.
Marvin worked as an electrician in the shipyard, and then for a telephone company. He then moved with his wife and children to Chicago to work for Reynolds Aluminum, and then moved back to Gresham to continue his work with them.
Marvin eventually became ill and retired on disability, and his family had some difficult times financially. Then came the day he picked the winning numbers and won the state lotto. Hard times were over, and life went well for years for him and his wife Geri, as they collected the lotto payments.
They began to spend their winters in Yuma, Arizona. Marvin became involved with the Masons, and he belonged to several lodges.
Marvin entered Pacifica Senior Living in Portland in 2015, where he resided until his passing.
Marvin will be laid to rest at Gresham Pioneer Cemetery with his wife, Geraldine.
