A reception will be held at 10:30am at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, with a Committal Service at 12:30pm at Willamette National Cemetery with honors by the U.S. Navy and Police Department.
He was born in Portland, OR on January 15, 1927. He graduated from Benson High School in 1945.
He joined the US Navy during World War II & was active for 2 years , plus he was 4 years in the US Navy Reserve.
He attended Multnomah College in Business Administration until he went to work with the Portland Police Bureau. His 30 year working career began as a Patrolman on October 10, 1950. He was promoted to Detective in July 1967; Sergeant in October, 1967; Lieutenant in January 1971; and retired October 16, 1980.
He was with the US Coast Guard Reserve – 3 years (Port Security). While he was in the Coast Guard, he taught seamanship, boat handling, piloting, river navigation, and ship nomenclature.
Along with his father, he owned & operated a charter boat on the Oregon Coast for many years.
He was a 20 year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, belonged to the Gresham Rock Club, and volunteered for the Friends of Vista House for many years.
He is survived by his children, Diane Muir of Bonny Lake, WA, Carol Rolf of Colville, WA, Lori Buerkle of Brush Prairie, WA, Greg Gowing of Camas, WA, and Jim Gowing of Camas, WA; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Mt. Hood Hospice and/or Portland Police Sunshine Division.
