He was born on March 18, 1944, in Klamath Falls, OR to Wilbur and Georgia Swearingen. He grew up in the Grants Pass area and graduated in 1962 from Grants Pass High School before joining the US Army. He served as a UH-1 “Huey” crew chief in Viet Nam and was awarded the Army Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters for the accumulation of combat flight hours. He was honorably discharges in 1965 and returned to Grants Pass, OR.
In 1967, George married Roberta Wilkinson, and together they built a beautiful life. They were blessed with three children: Robert who lives in Houston, TX, Jeannie from Portland, OR and Johnathan in Rainier, OR. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, his sister Judy Crowell of Houston, TX, their three children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George was a professional truck driver for more than 30 years, as an owner/operator. He was known for his dedication, hard work, and general competence as a long-haul driver. Later he completed an associate degree in electronics repair and began an in-home business of small electronic component repair until his retirement in 2004.
George had a passion for his dogs but also enjoyed reading, watching sports and growing plants. He was known for his quiet demeanor and broad knowledge and understanding of far-reaching topics. He had a great sense of humor and could always bring a smile to people's faces.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength.
Only a private family service will be held to remember George. Interment will follow later at Willamette National Cemetery.
