Alfred Harold “Nick” Nixon, 88, of Greenwood, Arkansas died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at St. Edward Mercy Hospice in Fort Smith. He was born to Elzie B. Nixon and Ida Gross Nixon on January 17, 1923 at Clark’s Chapel, Arkansas. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood. He retired in 1981 after forty years of U.S. Civil Service at Fort Chaffee. Alfred was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 34th Mechanized Calvary with General George S. Patton, Jr., in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before being wounded and returning home. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Sylvia Laster Nixon, a brother, Elmer Nixon and two sisters, Ruby Hearn and Edris Dell.
Funeral service will be 10 am Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at the Greenwood First Baptist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Viewing will be Tuesday from 1 – 9 pm at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 – 8 pm.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Dedmon and husband, Randy of Lowell, Marcia Witcher and husband, Gary of Fort Smith; five grandsons, Mark Dedmon and wife, Lee Ann of Lowell, Michael Dedmon and wife, Whitney of Rogers, Garett Witcher and wife, Lacey of Fort Smith, Craig Witcher of Fort Smith and Philip Witcher of Greenwood; three great grandchildren, Ryan Dedmon, Addison Dedmon and Cohen Witcher; one brother, Lester Nixon of Witcherville and two sisters, Bernice Golyar of Battle Creek, MI and Margie McCartney of Monticello, AR. He is also survived by two stepsons, Bob McNees and wife, Connie of Greenwood, Bill McNees and wife, Donna of Huntington, two step grandsons, Bobby McNees and wife Kelli of Springdale, Christopher McNees of Greenwood; three step granddaughters, Casey Jones and husband, Heath and Megan Jones and husband, Brandon both of Greenwood, Kathy Knox and husband, Derek of Barling, and five step great grandchildren, Jessalyn Jones, Conner Jones, Gavin McNees, Carson Jones and Harper McNees.
Pallbearers will be Mark Dedmon, Michael Dedmon, Ryan Dedmon, Garett Witcher, Craig Witcher, Philip Witcher and Dennis Woody. Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Holland’s Sunday School Class and members of the V.F.W.
