William Alfred Swan, longtime resident of Greenwich, CT; passed away peacefully surrounded by his four children on July 19, 2023. He was 92 years old or as he said a few days ago, “I’m only 7 ½ years from turning 100”.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York and was the son of George and Elizabeth Swan. Billy, as he was well known, attended high school in Brooklyn and went to Brooklyn Technical College graduating with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He retired at the age of 65 after a long career at Barnes Engineering. Billy had many interests throughout his life, one of which was astronomy and an infatuation with stars and planets. He loved to launch Estes rockets with his children when we were young as did we! After retirement, he enjoyed sculpting classes Tai Chi and adored his poodle, Nikki. He did love to play tennis and ski when he was younger.
Billy was quite the character and always knew how to make everyone smile with his constant barrage of corny jokes. He would talk to almost anyone he met and could readily entertain them. His doctor said he would have the entire waiting room and staff laughing by the time he came into her exam room and naturally would tell her the same jokes again! His positive, can-do attitude led him to live a long and happy 92 years!
He is survived by his children, Paul W. Swan, Barbara E. Swan, James R. Swan, Carolyn R. Zaklukiewicz and her husband Richard. Several grandchildren: Ryan Bergmann and his wife Emily, Kris Bergmann and his wife Riley, and Pat Bergmann; Kristen Chamberlin and Tiffany Davis; Leandra Keyes and her husband Wes and Meghan Zaklukiewicz and 10 great-grandchildren. He also is the wonderful uncle to George Swan and his wife Cindy and Debbie and her husband Ed along with their respective children. He is pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Jean, and his brothers, Gilbert and George Swan.
There will be a small celebration of life with the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to https://www.spcai.org/donate (an international organization that advance the safety and well-being of animals) or a charity of your choice.
