Kathryn Haag Clauss, a loving mother and grandmother to five children and six grandchildren, passed away in Greenwich, Conn., on Oct. 29, 2013, in the warm company of her family. She was a dynamic and irrepressible spirit, a lover of life, of people, of animals, of open water and sunshine, of beautiful things. She was a doer, a talker, and a force of nature.
To meet her was to remember her.
For the past 12 years, Kathryn was one of Greenwich’s—and the country’s—most successful real estate agents, an achievement born of her inimitable sense of style and prodigious gifts of persuasion. She made it all look effortless.
Kathryn was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in nursing. She then became an intensive care nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital before moving on to a series of personal and professional adventures. She lived in the Philippines, London, Hong Kong and New York, before settling in Greenwich in 1982. She actively raised and fiercely loved her five children—Bryan, Melissa, Lindsay, Ashley and Duncan—and instilled in them an unwavering sense of loyalty and commitment to each other. She was a committed and loving wife to Roy Stuart Clauss for twenty-five years. To the end, family meant everything to her. Her second love was the island of Nantucket. In 1996, she conceived and organized an event few others could: a concert by the Boston Pops to benefit the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, on Jetties Beach in the heart of summer. Now in its 18th year, the Pops concert has become one of the most popular and anticipated events of the year. She was especially close to her siblings, Jan, Jon, Larry and Martha; their spouses, John Veryzer, Kelley Dominique, Susan Fisher Haag, and Jean Mills; and her mother, Audrey Lucille Haag, who passed away in June. They all shared many laughs and there were certainly no dull moments. She also leaves her sons-in-law, Matthew Malone and Thomas J. Sheehy, whom she treated like her own children. They always marveled at her energy and ability to get into—and out of—every imaginable situation. Kathryn was determined to attend the late September wedding of her son, Bryan, to Sasha Feldman. She was thrilled to call Sasha her daughter-in-law and to have the opportunity to dance with her son on his wedding day. Her grandchildren—Madeleine, Ellie, Quinn, Teddy, Cooper and Adelaide—adored her. They would always run to meet their Grammie, and who could blame them—she always came bearing hugs, kisses, cupcakes and plans for spontaneous adventures. Her boundless love extended to her ten nieces and nephews and six grand nieces. To her, the more was always merrier. She also leaves behind her father, Ray Haag, of Bay Shore, NY. Kathryn was diagnosed with brain cancer in February 2013. She fought and lived the best she could during her illness. But she preferred to live as she always had, loud and boisterous, her glass full (of champagne). When she no longer could, she left for a place where that was, once again, possible. She will be missed, celebrated, and never forgotten. She would have it no other way. Services to be held on Saturday, November 2nd at 11 am at Christ Church in Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Adopt-A-Bench Program of Central Park Conservancy in Kathryn's name.
