Katherine Maida Sortor was born in New London, CT on March 20, 1934. She was the daughter of Charles R. and Catherine McCarthy Sortor and had a younger brother David Sortor. Bunny’s early years were eventful. She was just four years old when the Hurricane of 1938 devastated much of New London. A few years later, the nearby submarine base in Groton became the center of the Navy’s World War II efforts. Bunny’s best friend’s father (John Moore) was a much-decorated submarine commander who fought in the Pacific.
Bunny attended Smith College and especially enjoyed the year she spent studying abroad in Geneva. She went on to earn a JD degree at the University of Virginia Law School. After passing the NY Bar, she began work at RCA at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Bunny was one of the few female corporate attorneys in New York at the time. She was a valued member of the senior management of both RCA and later ITT Corporation. At ITT she travelled internationally to negotiate contracts as the company grew to become one of the largest conglomerates in the world.
Bunny married James D. Prokop MD, a neurosurgeon, and moved to a lovely home in Greenwich. Bunny enjoyed traveling and playing a variety of sports. She was a particularly good tennis player who won the women’s singles championship at the Greenwich Country Club when she was 40. She also enjoyed golf, swimming, paddle tennis, sailing, and even croquet where she once won the Indian Harbor Club Championship with her partner Marie Weigl.
In later years, Bunny enjoyed attending concerts at Caramoor and those offered by the Greenwich Symphony and the Greenwich Chamber Players. She loved to invite her friends and family to join her for dinner at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and the Greenwich Country Club.
Bunny generously endowed a Neurosurgery lecture series at Yale Medical School in honor of her late husband. She also contributed to several musical organizations and was an active supporter of many of the leading Democratic politicians in Connecticut.
She is survived by her niece Debbie Parnon, her nephew John Sortor, and her niece Suzanne O’Malley and their spouses, children, and grandchildren. Bunny, even at age 90, had a remarkable group of friends with whom she shared many wonderful experiences.
A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 am on November 22, 2024 at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich with a reception immediately following at the church. Interment will be private at her family’s cemetery plot near Princeton NJ. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial gift to The Chamber Players (PO Box 11, Greenwich, CT 06836) or the Greenwich Symphony (greenwichsymphony.org, "Support the GSO" to find instructions for online donations.)
