Bill was a beloved father, brother, and friend who lived life with a fair heart and quick wit. Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 30, 1946, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1966, attaining the rank of Sergeant and serving in the First Marine Division - 11th Regiment during the Vietnam War, fighting overseas in 1966 and 1967, before being discharged in 1969.
Following the war, he returned home to NY and began studying accounting, first earning his BBA from Hofstra University and later his MBA from NYU. After graduation he began working at Deloitte in New York City. It was during this time that Bill met the love of his life, Kathy Medwid, and the two were married on July 27th 1974 at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church in North Merrick New York, settling down first in Greenwich where he worked at Avco Corp, and then Ridgefield, Connecticut before relocating to Greenville, South Carolina in 1993.
An accomplished accountant, Bill worked for several prominent Greenville businesses over the last thirty years, including Bowater Inc., Umbro, AGFA, and Tatum Partners. He fully embraced Greenville as his second home and always found time to better the local community, serving as Treasurer of Holly Tree Country Club from 2000 to 2003, as well as on the board of Thrive Upstate, a charity that works to provide people with disabilities and special needs meaningful services and opportunities.
In addition to his parents William and Amelia (Mildred), Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years Kathy, as well as his brother Kevin. Bill is survived by his two sons, Scott and Brian, and his two sisters, Moira and Patti.
A visitation for Bill will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607. A funeral mass will occur Friday, June 21, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 2252 Woodruff Rd, Simpsonville, SC 29681,followed by the burial at Graceland East Memorial Park, 2206 Woodruff Rd, Simpsonville, SC 29681.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s honor may be made to the Bons Secours St. Francis Foundation.
