Patricia Duncan Berry, a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt passed away November 11, 2024. She was simply “Pat” or “Patty” to those who knew and loved her throughout her life of 83 years. Although deeply saddened by our loss, her family and friends are uplifted by the certainty that she is finally home and at peace.
Pat was born January 31, 1941, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Warren and Willa Mae Duncan. She is survived by her husband, David and a sister, Debbie Flurry of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Also surviving are two children: a daughter, Pamela and husband Mike, of Greenville and a son, David, Jr and wife, Kaci of Kennesaw, Georgia. Pat was proud to be “Gran” to five grandsons, Josh May (Meghan), Matt May (Maria), Kip May, Duncan Berry, Logan Berry. She was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Juliette and Avery May, Clara Cate, Beau and Ella Grace May. She was predeceased by her parents and her older sister, Pamela Colvin.
Pat was a graduate of North Little Rock High School in Arkansas, where she met her husband, David. She graduated from Arkansas Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. Pat and David, along with their children, resided in the Greenville area for the last 50 years except for two years in Houston, Texas.
Pat had an amazing impact as a friend, a registered nurse and, after retirement, as a volunteer at Buncombe Street Methodist Church, at Bon Secours Outpatient Surgery Center and at McCall Hospice House. Volunteering with the church, Pat prepared condolence notes to the families that had lost their loved ones. Volunteering with McCalls, she performed various hospice duties and joined a group lovingly named, “The Soul Sisters.” The Soul Sisters created and sewed comfort items, planned lunches and made holidays special for hospice patients and their families.
Pat was the glue and communicator for her family. Much of her joy came from keeping up with friends, family and classmates. She especially loved working with her group, “The Soul Sisters,” cross stitching, telling a good joke or story, lazy mornings, cats, chocolate and, as a good southern woman, sweet tea!
Her family wishes to especially recognize McCall Hospice House. Without exception, she was loved as a volunteer and during her last month of life, was cared for much like an extended family member which, in turn, provided peace and comfort for her family.
An informal visitation will be held on November 24, 2024, at 2:00 pm followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Buncombe Street Methodist Church, Greenville, SC.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to McCall Hospice House, 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680 or Buncombe Street Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
