The daughter of a sharecropper, she graduated from Mauldin HS, Draughon's Business College, and Indiana University. She began her career in banking and financial management in 1947 as a corporate secretary/treasurer and later CFO at First Federal Savings & Loan Association (The First). She earned the distinction of becoming the first woman in S.C. to complete the three-year course of the graduate school of the American Savings & Loan Institute, Bloomington, Indiana.
After 29 years, she retired from the industry to join her husband, J.T., playing golf, traveling, and enjoying life together until his unexpected passing in 1988. Following his death, she remained active in the hometown she loved. Formerly a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, she joined First Presbyterian Church (Circle 9), volunteered with the church's FirstPAWS Pet Therapy ministry and served as chapter treasurer, vice regent and regent of the Nathaniel Greene Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution.
A true lady, devoted to the Lord, her husband of 39 years and her family, she loved animals and flowers, was an avid reader and enjoyed frequent trips to the N.C. mountains.
She is predeceased by her husband, her parents Samuel McJunkin Raines and Lillian Roach Raines Sumner of Greenville, her sister Barbara Ann Raines Sumner Thompson of Macon, Ga., and a nephew Tony Thompson also of Macon.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Ann Hutchinson of Greenville; her "adopted son and other daughter", Rev. Stan Johnson and his wife Stephanie of Travelers Rest; her much-loved nephew Jeffrey Thompson and niece Tina Thompson, both of Macon.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, September 30, 2018, at 2pm in Harper Chapel, First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. Her family will receive friends following the service in the church loggia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
