He was a 1940 graduate of Greenville High School, and a 1943 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wofford College. He graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1947 and served his surgical residency at Baylor University Hospital in Houston, Texas under Dr. Michael DeBakey. He practiced general surgery in Greenville and Simpsonville with Dr. Lawrence McCalla, Dr. Morgan Milford, Dr. Todd Milford and Dr. Danny Mikell.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for sixty-two years. He served on the Board of Trustees at Wofford College receiving an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy, was a director of American Federal Bank, and a board member and president of Phillis Wheatley Association.
He was elected to five terms on Greenville County Council, including two terms as chairman. During that time the first county-wide emergency medical services (EMS) were initiated. Open garbage dumps were replaced with modern landfills. Regional centers were built to dispose of residential trash. Lakeside and Southside Parks were constructed. Hollis Center and the State Farmers' Market were built. The first county administrator and the first county engineer were employed. The first countywide mapping of real property was accomplished. A facility for the maintenance of county vehicles was opened. The Greenville Law Enforcement Center was built, and county offices were relocated to County Square.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-seven years, Rachel Quarles McCalla of Greenville, a daughter, Cathy McCalla Griffin (Hunter) of Columbia; two sons, Steve McCalla (Gretchen) of Columbia and Allen McCalla (Suzanne) of Greenville, and five grandchildren: Vivian Small Edwards, Sam McCalla, Rachel Griffin, Hunter Griffin Jr. and Reid Griffin. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Carter (Mary) Poe of Greenville. He was predeceased by a son, Bill McCalla and a brother, Dr. Sam McCalla of Greenville.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm on Tuesday the 17th with visitation at 2:00 pm at the church before the service. The family will be at 6 Chanticleer Drive.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Wofford College, Trinity United Methodist Church, The Greenville Little Theatre or the charity of the donor’s choice.
