James Carlisle Scott Jr.

Jim was born and raised in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Gaffney High School. He attended Clemson College (now University) where he earned a BS in Industrial Management in 1960, and years later an MBA. As an outstanding student at Clemson, Jim earned the rank of Cadel Colonel in Army ROTC. He was the Commander of the 4th Regiment of Pershing Rifles and a member of Blue Key Honor Society. Upon graduation, Jim was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Ordinance Corps, US Army, serving at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. He was then ordered to Bamberg, Germany serving in Co. A, 703rd Ordinance Battalion and was honorably discharged as 1st Lieutenant in 1962.

The majority of Jim’s career was spent working for Marshall and Williams Company, where he served as Vice President and General Manager of the Textile Division. Following retirement from Marshall and Williams, Jim was still eager to put his business mind to use. He spent several years working for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and was the Business Manager of Christ Church in Greenville.

Jim’s love of his church and community kept him very busy. At Christ Church he served multiple terms on vestry, as a lay reader and chalice bearer, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and various other committees. He was active in Cursillo and also spent many weekends volunteering with Kairos Prison Ministry at Perry Correctional Institute. He served on Boards of Directors Of Junior Achievement of Greenville, Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Greenville, United Way of Greenville County, Leadership Greenville, American Textile Machinery Association, and was on the Board of Trustees at Limestone College. Jim was a graduate of Leadership South Carolina, and also served as Chairman of the Greenville County Planning Commission.

Jim always embraced a challenge; whether it was walking a marathon in Alaska, getting his pilot’s license, building an ultralight airplane, building a kayak, or kayaking the entire state of South Carolina, he enjoyed the outdoors and all that it brought.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Beulah Scott; his sisters Edith Jones, Clara Bell, and Aileen Pennington.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Simpson Scott; children, David Frederic Scott (Sherri), Alan Wilson Scott (Ellen), Laura Scott Griffin; grandchildren, Hunter Lane Griffin, John Marshall Scott, James Collier Scott, Spencer Land Scott, William Carlisle Scott, and Alexander Lane Scott.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial donations to Christ Church of Greenville, United Ministries, or Meals on Wheels.

A private funeral will be held at Christ Church of Greenville.
