Jack Curtis Durham Sr., 96, of Greenville, South Carolina went to be with our Lord and Savior on December 24, 2021. He was born on August 27, 1925 in Pickens County to the late Charles Newton and Lola Griffin Durham.
Jack was a photo engraver with the Greenville News and retired after 42 years. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the Merchant Marines and the Army. During his service, he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Jack was also a Mason and a Shriner. In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, reading a variety of books related to politics, religion, and history, and playing golf. He was a former deacon at the First Baptist Church of Mauldin and a former member of The Church at LifePark in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth, in 1970. After her death, he assumed sole responsibility for raising their five children ages 9-18, of which trouble-maker Billy was one. In 1997 he married Carolyn Coleman, who also predeceased him in 2020.
He is survived by his five children: Dr. Jack C. Durham Jr. (Lee) of Greenville, S.C., Patricia Hunter (Randy) of Greenville, SC, Tammie Aycock of Charleston, SC, Toni Smith (Steve) of Augusta, GA, and Billy Durham (Robin) of Piedmont, S.C., twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren with another on the way.
He is also survived by Carolyn’s children; Jan Campbell (Anthony) and Julie Smith (Silas) and her four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers include his life long friend of 50 years, Al Smith and his youngest grandson, Glenn Durham who will receive the American Flag in honor of his grandfathers service.
A private graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack’s memory to the SC Governor’s School for Agriculture at John de la Howe, 192 Gettys Rd., McCormick, SC 29835
