DeWitt was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who lived his life to honor God and share the love of God with others. His warm smile could light up any room, and his kindness touched the hearts of many.
Born in Brewton, Alabama in 1941, DeWitt moved to Pensacola, Florida when he was in fifth grade. He loved being a big brother to his two sisters, Suzanne and Janice. DeWitt attended Pensacola High School and Bob Jones University. While at BJU, DeWitt met the love of his life, Jeanie Young. After marriage and graduation, the Steeles remained on staff at Bob Jones University for several years.
In 1969, DeWitt returned to Pensacola with Jeanie and their two daughters where they taught at Pensacola Christian School for fifteen years. DeWitt was a beloved teacher who absolutely loved teaching seventh grade biology. DeWitt went on to author several science textbooks for A Beka Book Publications.
DeWitt continued his education at the University of West Florida, earning two master’s degrees. After his time at PCS, he dedicated another fifteen years to teaching special education in Santa Rosa County, where he continued to make a lasting impact on the lives of his students.
In 2011, DeWitt and Jeanie moved back to Greenville, South Carolina. There, they enjoyed their retirement years, forming new friendships, spending time with family, and traveling together—especially loving their camping adventures.
