Born in Gary, IN on February 19, 1948, Charles "Chuck" "Alan" was the eldest son of the late Joan Jeanette Julian of Lake County, IN and the late Charles Austin Lee of Oconee County, SC. Growing up in Crown Point, IN, he spent summers on the farm in Seneca, SC with grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beaty Lee.
He completed Bachelors and Masters degrees in music education from Morehead State University in Kentucky and a PhD in education from the University of Michigan in 1982.
As a high school and college band director, his award-winning marching bands performed in such venues as Chicago's Soldier Field, Miss America pagents, and annually at the Kentucky Derby. He founded the Showband of the Stars at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, once traveling to the University of Hawaii for a football game.
He became the Director of Worldwide Education Marketing for the Unisys Corporation in Detroit and in the early 90's founded a company called Sound Choices specializing in the evolving field of Computers in Music Education.
Following a massive stroke in 1992, he relocated to Greenville, SC from Ann Arbor, MI in 1994 and became an active community volunteer and member of the Greenville Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the SC Genealogical Society with chapters in Greenville, Anderson, and the Old Pendleton District.
After moving into their home that fondly came to be known as the East North Street Concert House, Winery, Pecan, and Poultry Farm in 2001, he and his former wife of thirty-seven years, Elizabeth Marr Lee, enjoyed the musical, social and agricultural aspects of life in a historic home.
Other affiliations included the Greenville County Stroke Club, the Boy Choir of the Carolinas, the Greenville Concert Band, the Music Club of Greenville, and the Elbert W. Rogers Foundation. He was a member of the Commerce Club from 1997 until recently. He was a Life Member of the Indiana Historical society, Phoenix Society of SAE, Michigan Alumni Association, American Association of Higher Education, and the National Band Association.
In recent years as fans of the Greenville Drive, local downtown concerts, and Vegan Restaurants, Charles and his companion Ms. Dena McGaha enjoyed the growing Greenville scene, along with Dena's family, Chad and Sommer.
He is survived by his son Charles Alexander "Chip" Lee, three brothers Terry Calvin Lee of Valparaiso, IN, Patrick Walter Lee of Oconee County, SC, Robert Jeffery Lee of Crown Point, IN, and one sister, Pamela Joan Lee of Oconee County.
Visitation will be from 4-6pm at Mackey at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
Funeral service and committal will be 11am at the Chapel at Christ Church Episcopal, 10 North Church Street in Greenville, SC on Monday, March 21, 2022.
