Born in McBee, SC he was the grandson of the late James Warren and Evelyn Mixon Johnson and the son of the late James Earl Johnson. Dennis graduated from McBee High School, Brevard College, and then Clemson University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He returned to College at Liberty University in 2001 and received his Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling. Dennis began a career in commercial real estate before answering his lifelong calling as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addictions Counselor. As a Clinical Counselor, he was employed with Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County following many years of private practice in Greenville, SC. Dennis participated in various organizations volunteering as a group leader, teacher, and speaker. As a man of Faith, Dennis was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC and spent the majority of his life holding roles as a church officer. Dennis is survived by his two children Warren Johnson and Lauren Johnson, both of Greenville, SC, mother Inez Payne and sister Anga Johnson of Florence, two aunts Judy (John) Walker of Hartsville and Dobbie (Mike) Clayton of Seneca, SC. Dennis also had a very special relationship with cousins Todd Clayton of San Francisco, CA, Trent Clayton of Atlanta, GA and Becky Gooden of Lake Wylie, SC. He was preceded in death by his aunt Linda Gooden of Hartsville, SC.
A service to celebrate Dennis’s life will be Sunday, October 13 at 3pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 3:00, Sunday at Woodlawn Funeral Home one hour prior to the service at 3:00pm. A committal service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Brevard College held a special place in his heart and he returned for the reunion every year, so in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brevard College Foundation Fund, 1 Brevard College Drive, Brevard, NC 28712.
