Charles Henry Grisham was born in Ingomar (Union County) Mississippi on April 9, 1924, to Broadus and Verna (Staggs) Grisham. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Sara Whisenant (also of Ingomar) for more than 78 years (1944-2023). They were blessed with three children: Sylvia, Patricia and Larry, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Charles joined the U.S. Marine Corps in May, 1943 and served with honor and distinction for twenty- six and one-half years active duty and three and one-half years in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves. Charles served in World War II, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. His duty stations included Quantico, VA, Tsingtao, China, Cherry Point, NC, Camp Lejeune, NC, El Toro, Cali, Barbers Point and Kaneohe, Hawaii, NATTC, Millington, Tenn., Atsugi, Japan, Chu Lai, Vietnam and MCAS, Beaufort, SC.
After retiring in Beaufort, SC, he worked in sales at Kinghorn Building Supplies and Graco until at age 76, he devoted his time to his own hobbies- building homes for Habitat for Humanity making many new friends. He also built his own workshop at home and began building furniture for his family- an executive style desk, a dresser, grandfather clock, quilt boxes, benches and a garden swing- all treasured keepsakes now.
Charles was an active member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort for more than 50 years, serving as an usher, Sunday school teacher, and Deacon. He also accompanied his wife, Sara, visiting homebound seniors.
Charles had been a member of Port Royal Lodge # 242 since 1972.
He was a quiet man of integrity and loyalty who loved his God, family and country.
He had been living in Greenville, SC with his wife and near other family since July, 2020. His sweet spirit passed peacefully on to heaven on February 10, 2023.
A memorial service and burial will be held at The Baptist Church of Beaufort at a later date.
