William “Bill” Smiley, 77, of Greensburg, passed away at his residence on July 23, 2011. He was born on August 8, 1933 in Decatur County, the son of George Owen Smiley and Crystal (Davis) Fox. William was a 1951 graduate of Burney High School and went on to study at Purdue University. He married Barbara Parker on June 26, 1955. William was a Farmer. He was awarded the Master Farmer award for Indiana and was a Host of the Farm Management Tour. He was a member and Trustee of the Burney Baptist Church and was Treasurer of the Church Building Fund. He served on the Decatur County Fair Board, the board of directors for the Decatur County Bank; he was on the 1st School Board of Decatur County Schools; Decatur County Zoning Board of Appeals; the CARET Board of the Purdue University Extension and was awarded the Certificate of Distinction from the Decatur County Extensions Service. He was a United States Army Veteran.
Survivors include: Wife-Barbara Smiley, Sons- Gordon (Beth), Bob (Kathy), and Jeff (Pam), Sister- Martha Davis, Grandchildren- Olivia, Sabrina, Sarah Rose, Natalie, Paje, and Will, several nieces, nephews, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Rand Hooton and Pastor Steve Pumphrey will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Burney Baptist Building Fund, Hospice, or Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp-Grace Hall. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.gilliland-howe.com
