“big.” He was devoted and loyal to his family, friends, and career, most particularly his wife of 60 years, Ramona. His earnest curiosity about people, places, and perspectives rendered him a wonderful conversationalist, travel companion, and sounding board, as well as an avid, lifelong learner. His deep regard and genuine concern for others made him an exceptionally dedicated physician with a reputation for outstanding patient care. As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, we hold abundant gratitude for his loving care, support, wisdom, and humor.
Tom was born in Monroe, North Carolina on May 6, 1940 to Rosa Nell Cox Presson and Lawrence Stewart Presson. He was educated at Walter Bickett High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar and subsequently completed medical school. Dr. Presson served as a major at the United States Army base in Frankfurt, Germany between 1967 and 1970. Upon his return stateside, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital of UNC Chapel Hill. In 1972, Dr. Presson joined Greensboro Orthopaedics, where he practiced until his retirement in 2002.
Over the course of his medical career, he was active in several state and regulatory organizations including the Southern Orthopaedic Association, the Atlantic Bone Club, and the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association, for whom he served as President. Tom enjoyed fellowship with the Rotary Club of Greensboro and West Market Street United Methodist Church, where he particularly enjoyed participating in the koinonia Sunday school class. Following his retirement, Tom and Ramona spent much of their time in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, where they created many happy memories with family and friends.
