A service celebrating Sam Sue’s life will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 18, 2016 in First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery and the family will gather with friends at the home following the service. On Thursday, March 17, 2016 the family will gather with friends at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Funeral Home from 5:30-7:30 pm.
A native of Leland, NC, Dr. Sue was the son of Samuel Arthur Sue and Alberta Gainey Sue. He graduated from Leland High Scholl, Campbell College, Wake Forest College (cum Laude), and Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest College. Dr. Sue began his distinguished medical career by interning at Greenville General Hospital, Greenville, North Carolina and then serving as Resident of Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he trained under future Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop. He also served as an extern at Pottsville General Hospital in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, where he met his beloved wife, Ceil. Following his internship, he enlisted in the Unites States Air Force and became Flight Surgeon, Chief of Orthopedics at Webb Air Force Base Hospital in Big Spring Texas. He completed his orthopedic residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest College and North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Dr. Sue was a founding member and practicing orthopedic surgeon at Greensboro Orthopedic Center in Greensboro, NC from 1962-June of 2002. His local affiliations were with Moses Cone Hospital, and Wesley Long Community Hospital, where he served a term as Chief of Surgery.
Following his retirement from Greensboro Orthopedic Center, Dr. Sue became medical director of Lorillard Tobacco Company, Greensboro, North Carolina and staff orthopedist at Western Rockingham Family Medicine in Madison, NC; a member of Medical Alumni Council of Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University.
Dr. Sue was very active in his profession, his community and with his beloved Wake Forest University and Campbell University. He held memberships in numerous local, state, and national medical and orthopedic associations and was a Fellow of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the Society of Arthritic Joint Surgery. Dr. Sue served as a member of the North Carolina State Insurance Committee as orthopedist, was a former vice president o the North Carolina Orthopedic Association and was president of the Medical Board of Wesley Long Community Hospital.
Sam had been a board member of the Greensboro American Red Cross Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Society, Trustee of Greensboro Day School.
Sam was past president of the Wake Forest Alumni Association, served as a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, and was a member of the Medical Alumni Council of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University. Sam served Campbell University as a board member of Presidential Advisors, and served a term on the Board of Trustees.
Sam received many honors during his career but most humbled by being named the recipient of the 1989 Outstanding Alumni Award for Campbell University and with receiving the 2015 Distinguish Service Award from the Medical Alumni Association of Wake Forest School of Medicine. Sam was also extremity pleased to be awarded an Honorary Letter by the Athletic Department at Wake Forest University for his boundless support of Demon Deacon Athletics for more than 60 years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro where he served 2 terms on their Board of Deacons.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Cecelia “Ceil” J. Ulinitz Sue; daughter Melissa Sue Vaughan (Jim); sons, Samuel Arthur Sue, III and Gary Kent Sue (Kim); brother William Morris Sue( Bidgie); and grandchildren Cary Kent Sue, Jr., Samuel Davis Sue, Anna Elizabeth Vaughan; and George Curren Vaughan, II.
In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by his brother, Franklin Eugene (Gene) Sue.
