Devoted wife and mother, precious grandmother and great grandmother, Ruth White Whitfield, 93, died January 21, 2018 at Moses Cone Hospital. A graveside service will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, January 24 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, officiated by Pastor Tim Grant.
Ruth was born in Forsyth County to the late William and Lillie Allen White. She spent many years in the cosmetology industry and worked for more than 30 years with LaMarick Enterprises which operated the hair salon at the Belk downtown location. She was an encouraging mentor to many younger stylists. She married James O’dell Allen and together they traveled to different states with his job with Grinnell Mechanical Products as a steamfitter. While living in Oak Ridge, TN she served as a chauffeur to an Army Colonel. Ruth and James had a happy but short lived union, as he died in 1949, leaving behind Ruth with their young daughter, Jan. A few years later, while working for Belk, she met Joseph Aubrey Whitfield and shared a wonderful marriage until his passing.
Ruth was a woman of strong faith and worshipped for more than ten years at Glenwood Friends Meeting. She was a very loyal friend and loved spending time with her family. Not one to sit still, after a long day at work she would come home and clean her home. Ruth loved to cook and keep her home impeccably tidy.
She is survived by her daughter and husband, Jan and Hubert Ellisor of Greensboro; grandchildren, James D. Ellisor and wife Caren of Concord and Lisa Ellisor of Marietta, GA; great grandchildren, Jamie and Jason Ellisor; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her spouses, Ruth is preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Ruth’s family would like to thank the staff of Blumenthal’s Heath and Rehab Center for their loving care shown to Ruth during her residency. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro or the Humane Society. Online condolences may be offered at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the family.
