He was born in Rittman, Ohio on February 23, 1932, the only child of Joseph and Bertha Sherrick. At 11 years old he started playing trumpet with the high school band, the same year his father passed away.
He attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio where he met the love of his life Carolyn Jane Brown. They were married 71 years ago on June 6, 1953 in Dayton, Ohio.
After graduation Dick served in the army during the Korean War. He then began his professional career with IBM. He spent most of the next 40 years in the DC suburbs raising his 3 children of whom he was very proud. He shared with them his respect and caring for others as well as his love of the outdoors; hiking, backpacking, canoeing, biking, cross country skiing, and picnicking. He was active in church as a Deacon, an Elder and singing bass in the choir. He also sang in multiple choral groups, including at least 4 international tours. Dick was devoted to lifelong service including the Boy Scouts. Starting as a scout, he became a scout father, scoutmaster, commissioner, leader on Eagle Boards and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Some of his favorite memories include leading 4 High Adventure trips to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch.
After retiring to Greensboro NC, Dick and Carolyn explored the world traveling to 90 countries across the six major continents.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Bertha Sherrick. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Carolyn, children; Dana (Warren) Walker, Beth (Dennis) Creamer, Rick Sherrick, chosen daughter Sally (Mo) Bernstein, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren to carry on his legacy.
“Some say the value of a man is based on the wealth they obtained or the power they accumulated. I know, and I believe you all know, this is not true. A person’s metal is weighted not by power or wealth but by the lives they touched. My Dad dropped pebbles in the water wherever he might be, creating ripples that touched so many. I was greatly blessed to be nourished and molded by those ripples. The world needs more ripple makers. He will be greatly missed.” Rick Sherrick
