Mrs. Phyllis Otto Germain, 89, of Greensboro, died Friday, July 18, 2014 at Spring Arbor of Greensboro.
A memorial service will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m. at Spring Arbor by Rev John Hartman.
Phyllis was born August 7, 1924 in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar Otto and Eloise Treat Otto.
Phyllis was a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago and as an accomplished golfer, was the 1946 National Collegiate Women’s Golf Champion. Her impressive golf career also included three time winner of the Iowa Women’s State Amateur, 1945 winner of the Women’s Western Amateur beating Babe Didrikson Zaharias in the finals, member of the 1946 Curtis Cup Team, and 1981 Women’s Western Senior Champion.
Phyllis had an adventurous spirit and especially loved hiking and exploring in the Utah mountains. She was an easy-going optimist who was committed to her family and active in her church and community.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John Harvey Germain and her brother, Stanley Otto.
Surviving are her son, John Germain of Port Ludlow, WA; daughters, Margie Carter of Fairfax Station, VA, Dorothy Germain of Randleman and Barbara Germain of Julian; grandchildren, Kristen Germain, Jill Germain, Tommy Branson, Anna Branson, Lindsay Bartos and Megan Carter.
