Mr. Omax Hairr, 85, died on Monday, April 9th, 2018 at his residence, Heritage Green Senior Living Community. Mr. Hairr was born on October 8, 1932 in Sampson County, NC to the late Lattie A. and Bettie Royal Hairr. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Elma Tyndale, Jean Stewart and Gertrude Spell; four brothers, William Paul Hairr, Lattie A. Hairr, Jr., Rupert Hairr and Roger Hairr.
He graduated from Clement High School in Autryville, NC in 1950, the year he also married his high school sweetheart. In 1953, they moved to Greensboro, and he was hired by Monarch Elevator Company. There he began his career in the machine shop while learning drafting and electrical applications. Two years later Monarch was acquired by Dover Elevator Corporation. Mr. Hairr remained with Dover until his retirement in 1995, working first as elevator installer in many cities on the East Coast, followed by promotions to Service Engineer, Construction Manager and finally Construction Superintendent. He was a member of the National Council of Industrial Management Clubs and was named IMC “Key Man of the Year” in 1961. He was awarded numerous Dover Corporation Safety Awards.
Not one to sit still long, except to watch his beloved North Carolina Tarheels and New York Yankees, after retirement he quickly found a variety of entrepreneurial endeavors to make good use of his people skills. In his last several years, he enjoyed daily breakfasts at Jesse’s Diner on Gate City Blouvard where he made good friends with customers and staff alike.
Mr. Hairr was also a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and a friend, confidante and counselor to many. In his years at Immanuel Baptist Church he served as Deacon, Choir member and on church committees. His faith was evident in the care, love and generosity he showed to others in all aspects of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Oliween Shepard Hairr; his daughters, Lynn Jarrard and husband Jim of Raleigh, NC and Susan Barr of Burlington; his brother Carl E. Hairr and wife Becky of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Lauren (Doug) Tabler, Sara (Jason) Warren, Leslie (Tionne Harrison) Barr and Michael (Emilee Smith) Barr; great grandchildren, Luke Tabler, Gavin Tabler, Emma Warren, Hudson Warren and Triston Harrison; sisters-in-law, Betty Hairr, Pearle Hairr and MaryAnna Stewart and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 3:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
