A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street. The family will receive friends following the service in the Virginia Gilmer Room.
He is survived by his former wife, Peggy Gillikin Beaman; sons, Oliver James “Jay” Beaman, Jr. and his wife, Melissa Hand Beaman of Raleigh, NC, Ernest Frederick “Fred” Beaman and his wife, Kary Schmidt Beaman of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Margaret Anderson “Anne” Beaman of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Samuel Bret Beaman of Raleigh, NC, Russell Hand Beaman of Los Angeles, CA, Christopher Frederick Beaman of Charlotte, NC and sisters, Betty Sue Beaman Bobo of Southern Pine, and Peggy Beaman Britt of Chapel Hill, NC .
Ollie was preceded in death by his father, William Joseph Beaman, Sr., of Sampson, County, NC; mother, Susie Oliver Beaman of Caswell County, NC; brothers, William Joseph “Bill” Beaman, Jr. and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Doggett Beaman and Allman Beaman, Bruce Edward Beaman and his niece, Laura Beaman.
He was a native of Greensboro, attended Greensboro Senior High School and UNC Chapel Hill. During World War II, Ollie was a Lieutenant in the US Navy Air Corp flying Navy fighters from an aircraft carrier. Upon discharge from the Navy, Ollie attended UNC Chapel Hill and upon graduation, went to work for the family company, Beaman, Inc. Later Ollie formed his own companies, Beaman Building Specialties, which was a wholesale distributor of Pella windows, doors, and other products. Ollie also founded Colonial Corporation as an investment holding company, and his real estate company Beaman Realty Company, which he started in 1956.
Ollie was a former Director and helped establish Greensboro Better Business Bureau. He was also a former member of the Home Builders Association, Greensboro Jaycees, Elks Club, Carrousel Cotillion, Greensboro Toastmasters, Friendly Toastmasters, and former Advisor to the Boy Scouts.
Ollie was a member of the UNC Alumni Association, Super Seniors Golf Group, Greensboro Country Club, Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, Greensboro Realtors Association, Greensboro Jaycee Oldtimers, Greensboro Kiwanis Club, Shepherd Senior Center, Sportime Athletic Club, Senior Couples Interclub Organization (SCIO). He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and was a loyal and dedicated member of Young Men’s Bible Class.
