Born in Watertown, NY on April 8, 1961, he was the son of Hollis C. Dorr and Marian L. Moffatt Dorr. As a young boy, he enjoyed ice fishing, hunting, playing lacrosse, and exploring nature. After graduating high school at General Brown High, he went on to receive an associate’s degree in Hotel Management from SUNY-Canton. Shortly after, he joined the United States Armed Forces, enlisting from Syracuse, NY and completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in MS. He was transferred to San Antonio, TX at Fort Sam Houston to complete training in the X-Ray Specialist courses. It was there in the fall of 1981 that he met the love of his life, Susan Y. Milot. They were married shortly after in San Antonio, December 11, 1981. Both continued to serve, and were transferred again together to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. Neil was honorably discharged from the US Armed Forces, May 8, 1988.
Neil and Sue moved to Greensboro, NC in April of 1988, where they purchased their lifelong home in River Hills, and started their decades-long careers at Cone Health System. Juggling full-time work, two children, and various other commitments, Neil went back to school, once at UNC-Greensboro for a B.A. in Business Administration, graduating with honors, and again for an M.A. in Health Administration from Pfeiffer University. In addition to those achievements, Neil served as President of the River Hills Homeowner’s Association, and the Architectural Committee for over 25 years. At Cone Health, Neil started as a CT/MRI Technician in 1988, and after 33 years of service, he worked as a Manager in the Managed Care Contracting Department. Greensboro was his home, where he and Sue started their family, and where Neil work hard to build a life and everlasting legacy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hollis C. Dorr, on November 20, 2020.
Among his survivors are his loving wife of 40 years, Susan Y. Dorr; their two children, Sarah E. Dorr of Columbus, OH, Kyle R. (Sarah) Dorr of Greensboro, NC; mother, Marian L. Moffatt Dorr of Watertown, NY; two siblings, William K. (Deirdre) Dorr of Walkersville, MD, Gail L. (Rick) Herman, of Canandaigua, NY; nieces and nephews, Marian (Alan) Marchiori, William (Jennifer) Dorr, and Patrick (Kiernan) Dorr.
Neil loved being there for his children, attending every game and function, and was proud to cheer on their many accomplishments. He enjoyed traveling and experiencing all of the beauty that the world has to offer. He hiked the Grand Canyon, rafted the Colorado River, climbed to the top of Bell Rock in Sedona, AZ, and rode bikes all across beaches and deserts, always eager to live life to the fullest. His happy place, where he dreamed he and his wife, Susan, would retire, was Belews Lake, NC. He enjoyed boat rides, jet skiing, fixing up their lake home, and laughing with friends and family.
