If ever there was a woman who emulated Proverbs 31:10 it was Nancy Spencer Joyce. Her love for the Lord and her family came before everything else. Nancy Spencer Joyce, 78, was enjoying life as she always did when she passed away suddenly in Blowing Rock on July 17, 2017. Her family will receive guests on Thursday, July 20 from 6 to 8 PM at Trinity Church and celebrate her life on Friday, July 21 at 2 PM at Trinity Church, 5200 W. Friendly Avenue.
Nancy was born in Madison, NC to the late Kermit and Edna Spencer. After she graduated from Women’s College (UNC-G), Nancy worked in Washington, DC for Congressman Ralph Scott. On a blind date she met Steve A. Joyce. He was captivated by her energy, outgoing personality, beautiful red hair, and quest for adventure. And what an adventure it has been! In 1958, they married and began their journey together which would last 58 years. They moved home to the Greensboro area to raise their growing family. That family would grow to seven children, many grands and greats. Oak Ridge, Summerfield and the Greensboro area have always been and continue to be home for the entire family. The family has wonderful memories of their mom’s beautiful gift of hospitality. Her home has always been open to young and old alike. Indeed, many now married couples met because of Nancy’s gracious hosting. With Steve by her side, they have been a blessing to so many. With Christ as their rock, they have lived and loved much! Nancy was a prolific artist and even though she relinquished her artistic talent during the early years to be a supportive wife and full time mother, Nancy resumed her painting as children left home. She studied art internationally in China, Brazil, France, and Italy and was a member of the Guilford College Art Appreciation Club.
Nancy was a great athlete and she believed she was never too old to learn something new. In her youth she excelled in basketball. As an adult she enjoyed tennis, skiing, and golf. Her physical capabilities, no doubt came from the healthy lifestyle she maintained throughout her life. Nancy was ahead of her time with ideas about healthy eating, organic gardening and staying active. She was a wonderful cook, and true to form, saw it as a creative experience.
Nancy, with her husband, was a member of Trinity Church and Greensboro and Blowing Rock Country Clubs.
Nancy will be remembered for her beautiful and generous spirit. She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Steve Alan Joyce; children and their spouses, Lori Joyce Gray, Cristy (Douglas) Hartzoge both of Oakridge, Dana (Eddie) Waynick of Summerfield, Steve (Mimi) Joyce, Jr., of Greensboro, Jennifer (Stan) Dymek , Nancy Joyce Jones, and Meredith (Stefan) Hoffman all of Summerfield; grandchildren, Nancy, Jack, Stoney, Reid, Ellen, Ali, Jamie, Liza, Nora Kate, Stan Jr., Faith, Jeffrey, Tyler, Madison, Spencer, and Brady; five great grandchildren; brothers, Randall (Carol) Spencer and Steven (Kristy) Spencer; and her beloved canine companion, Polly. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army of Greensboro or the charity of one’s choice.
