Greensboro-Michael Anthony Winkler, beloved husband, spectacular father, precious son, steadfast brother and loyal friend, died at Beacon Place on September 4, 2015. Mike was 50 and fought a hard battle with colon cancer. A memorial mass will be at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 9 at St. Pius X Catholic Church with a reception to follow at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel.
He was born in Muskegon, MI to Julius and Margaret LaBelle Winkler. Mike received his Associates’ degree from ECPI and was employed as a Senior IT manager for 15 years with Accordant Health. He was well respected by his colleagues for his strong work ethic, integrity and people skills. A quick wit, genuinely caring spirit and confident manner made others at ease in his company. For over twenty years he has been a friend, provider and constant companion to Nancy Pederson Winkler. They’ve raised two sons who will remember a father who cheered from the sidelines of their life and made them the center of his world. Not a minute of Mike’s day was wasted. He was early to rise and got the whole family moving for the day’s activities. He loved to be outside golfing, riding his bike, running or any other activity and his family now cherish the memories they made together on exciting vacations. Mike’s strong will coupled with a tenacious fight to live has been an inspiration to everyone whose path he crossed during this long journey.
In addition to Nancy and his parents, he is survived by his sons, Jarod Russell and Eric Michael Winkler; brothers, Steve of Charlotte and Joe of Michigan; sister, Ann Kranenvorg and husband Gerben of Michigan; grandmother, Beatrice LaBelle of Michigan; parents-in-law, James and Carolyn Pederson of Cary; five nieces and nephews; and canine friend, Maddie.
Dr. Elizabeth Golding has been a god-send to Mike and his family and the family also thanks Beacon Place for their compassion during his stay. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to The Colon Cancer Alliance, 1025 Vermont Ave NW, Suite 1066, Washington, DC 20005 or online are greatly appreciated.
