Buddy was born in Washington, DC on October 11, 1941 to the late Lt. Col. Lloyd H. Garland, Jr. and Maree T. Garland. Being born into a military family, they lived in many places all over the United States and Canada. He was involved in swimming, track and field, football, baseball, and basketball all through his youth and in college he played football for the University of Hawaii. When he met the love of his life, Sandra Carmi, they settled in Northern Virginia. Buddy worked for Motorola Communications and Electronics as an award-winning regional sales manager and retired after 25 years. His extracurricular activities included reading (especially historical novels), watching and attending sporting events, coaching and refereeing little league football and baseball, managing youth sports leagues, and was also highly involved in high school boosters. He loved animals and the great outdoors, especially the ocean, where the family spent many vacations along the southern East Coast. After retirement, he and Sandra moved to North Carolina in 2001, where he spent his recent years enjoying and supporting his grandchildren’s activities. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Boyd; and a brother, Richard Garland.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 58 years, Sandra Carmi Garland; children, Kimberly Garland Field (and husband, Brian) of Crofton, MD, Christopher Carmi Garland (and wife, Anne) of Greensboro, NC, and Kevin Garland (and wife, Melissa) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Andrew Garland, Noah Taylor, Dawson Taylor, Kristen Garland, Kelli Garland, and Hailey Garland; sisters, Patricia Hernandez and Victoria Walton; brother, Randolph Garland; and other extended family members.
