Rickey was born in Guilford County on May 15, 1956, the youngest son of Odell and Laura Chatham McCoy, who preceded him in death along with his oldest brother, Odell “Pete” McCoy Jr. He graduated from Northwest High School in 1975. Rickey was a volunteer with the Colfax Fire Department until 1983 and had an admiration for all firefighters, especially Colfax and Greensboro.
Rickey spent his life working in the metal fabrication business. He worked for over 17 years with A-B Fab and then started his own company after A-B Fab closed. He stayed involved with the company until his death and the company now is truly a family business, McCoy Fab Inc. and being run by his son, Rickey Jr. Rickey also enjoyed scuba diving and was a part of getting the County Rescue Dive Team started. Rickey is survived by his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Harris McCoy and thier only child, Kenneth Rickey McCoy Jr., both of Greensboro, NC; brother, Jerry McCoy and wife Emma of High Point, NC; niece, Kimberly McCoy and her son, Trey of Greensboro and nephew Dean McCoy and his family of Texas and Oklahoma. He is also survived by many special cousins and often reminisced about special times spent with them.
A Celebration of Rickey’s life will be held on Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Rev. Mike Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
