A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel, 515 N. Elm St., in Greensboro. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband Jim Hazen; daughter, Margaret Hazen and her husband Ashby Bernardino; and one grandchild.
Karen was born in Richmond, VA and grew up in Washington, DC. She attended school at The Maryland School for the Deaf and later graduated with a BS from Gallaudet University. She chose a career in education, first in Maryland and then after her marriage in April of 1982, she moved with her husband to Greensboro and worked at The Central NC School for the Deaf in Browns Summit. She loved her cats, dogs and hobbies which included arts and crafts. She was an active Civil War reenactor with her family and also loved to travel around the country. In retirement, and even after years of dialysis, she will always be remembered for her smile, a greeting to all, no matter how she felt. She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
