John Carroll Compton, a long-time Greensboro resident, passed away peacefully at Beacon Place on January 11, 2024, after a lengthy battle with cancer. A native of Woodruff, S.C., he was born on July 3, 1941, to the late Ligon Grant Compton and Thelma Blythe Compton.
John was educated at Myers Park High School (’59) in Charlotte and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (’63), where he studied accounting. After graduating from UNC, he served as a U.S. Navy officer, including tours of duty with the U.S.S. Littlehales (AGSC-15). He then began a long and distinguished career in accounting, first with stints at KPMG and Henderson Advertising in Greenville, SC and then Cherry, Bekaert & Holland LLP, where he quickly rose to partner and, Partner in Charge of Accounting & Auditing for the firm. During his tenure at CB&H, John was actively involved in professional organizations such as the AICPA and became widely recognized as an industry expert, instrumental in the continued development of Generally Accepted Accounting Standards.
Outside of professional life, John’s diverse interests included family history, photography, raising Springer Spaniels, traveling, and - most of all- spending time with his grandchildren. In addition, he always found time to be an enthusiastic servant of the community. He served as President of the Ronald McDonald House of St. Petersburg, FL and was actively involved with the Episcopal Church, in multiple leadership positions. Later, in retirement, he volunteered extensively with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, mentoring individuals through the Education for Ministry program, and delivering food for Meals on Wheels. In the years since his wife’s passing, John actively took part in the church group TWIGS and gained a group of friends who were indispensable in supporting him through his widowhood.
John was predeceased by his wife, the former Monnie Digh Compton, for whom he was a loving husband of over fifty years. He is survived by his daughters Nicole Lowrance (David) of Johns Creek, GA, and Christen Allison (Brent) of Arden, NC; and grandchildren Jack Lowrance of Washington, DC, Caroline Allison of Chapel Hill, NC, Anna Lowrance of Bryn Mawr, PA, and Sarah Margaret Allison of Arden, NC. Also surviving are his brother David Compton (Cindy) of Charlotte, NC and brother-in-law, Charles Digh (Nicha) of Spartanburg, SC.
From onset of his illness, he was blessed by the love of his children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends who remained by his side.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro immediately followed by a reception at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home (515 North Elm Street).
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made in John’s memory to AuthoraCare Foundation of Greensboro – Beacon House (2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro NC 27405) or Greensboro Urban Ministry (305 West Gate City Blvd. Greensboro NC 27406)
