A native of Appalachia, Virginia, Joe settled in Greensboro, NC in his early years. Joe proudly served in the US Army and retired from Kroger and the NC ABC Board in 1994. He was an avid gardener, golfer and fisherman. His green thumb was notorious in the Glenwood neighborhood. Joe enjoyed countless hours at the downtown YMCA, volunteering with the Lindley Park special needs athletes and working with the Greensboro College football organization on the chain gang.
As much as he enjoyed his hobbies, he adored his family and throughout his health battle continued to put them first. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Hughlene of 31 amazing years, his daughter Susan Suits (husband Dan), stepchildren James Bishop (wife Holly) and Kimberly Queen (husband Tim), two sisters Rachel Isaac and Margie Clevenger and brother Charlie Collins (wife Debbie). Last but not least were his greatest prides, his grandchildren, Stephen Suits, Cameron and Jordan Queen and Hagen, Logan and Sarah Bishop.
