Jean Wehner died Wednesday March 28, 2012 at Wesley Long Hospital. She was born February 15, 1919in Winfield, IL the daughter of Jeanette Elizabeth Vinton Jens and Arthur Marx Jens. Jean was raised in Wheaton, IL and graduated from Wheaton Community High School where she had been a cheerleader. She had 1 ½ years at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1941 with a BA degree in Sociology and Psychology and where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi fraternity.
She married Philip Wehner in 1943 and after graduating from college and during the first years of her marriage she was employed by Penn Mutual Insurance Co. and Roycemore Toiletries, Inc. During a period of 20 years when she and her family lived in Toms River, NJ., she was instrumental in bringing a YMCA to that community. She served on capital fund drives for Community Memorial Hospital, YMCA and her church.
After moving to Greensboro in 1973 she became a member of and an Elder in Sedgefield Presbyterian Church where she initiated the “College Connection” and designed and made baptismal towels. She was a past president of the Women’s Golf Assn. of Sedgefield Country Club. Her entire life included swimming-competing, life guarding, teaching and coaching.
Jean was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Philip Wehner; a sister, Mary Jens Williams and two brothers, Arthur Marx Jens, Jr. and Edward Albert Jens.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Mary Hart; son, David Jens Wehner; granddaughter, Leigh Anne Hart; great grandson, Jeffrey Mark Smith all of Greensboro and nine nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church, 4216 Wayne Road, Greensboro, NC 27407 on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Tempe Fussell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Sedgefield Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
